The Quality Issue – May 2025

Happy Clinical Trials Day! 🎉

In this edition of the Quality Issue, we discuss the origin of this day, a new research study by The Tufts CSDD, and of course, some dates for your diary at the end of May and beginning of June.

National Clinical Trials Day is celebrated on May 20th each year to honour the pivotal role that clinical research plays in advancing medical science and improving patient care. The date commemorates the first documented clinical trial conducted by Scottish physician James Lind in 1747, who tested treatments for scurvy among sailors. This day serves to recognize the dedication of clinical trial professionals, researchers, and, most importantly, the volunteers who participate in trials, contributing to the development of new treatments and therapies. It also raises public awareness about the importance of clinical trials in ensuring that medical interventions are safe and effective.

You can learn more about the history and purpose of Clinical Trials Day by visiting the ACRP – Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) dedicated website.

The Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development (Tufts CSDD) is conducting new research aimed at understanding how study monitoring and data collection practices are changing and evolving. This research will assess how sponsor companies are approaching implementation of more centralized and risk-based monitoring approaches, and how sponsor and CRO field-based monitors are adjusting and adapting.
